Abstract

824,638. Cutting webs. KODAK Ltd. July 16, 1958 [July 18, 1957], No. 22845/58. Class 31 (1). A die assembly for cutting sheets, e.g. photographic prints, from a continuous web comprises die members 24, 25 fixed to a stationary support 20 across which a web W is adapted to be advanced intermittently from a supply roll 10 by means of rollers 11, 12 a punch 49 which is mounted on a hinged carrier 35 for movement towards and away from the support 20 in synchronism with the intermittent advance of the web and, when the web is stationary, co-operates with the die members to cut a sheet from the end of the web, a sheetejecting roller 57 which is moved into contact with the portion of the web to be cut-off as the punch carrier 35 is lowered and is moved out of the path of movement of the web as the punch carrier is raised, the roller 57 having a friction surface which resists relative motion between the roller and the web when they are in contact, and a spring 60 which is tensioned, after the roller 57 has come into contact with the web, during the lowering of the punch carrier and rotates the roller 57 to eject a sheet from the assembly as soon as the sheet has been cut off the web. The roller 57 is freely mounted on a shaft 56, Fig. 5, which is rotatably mounted on a U-shaped bracket 54 pivotally connected to a stationary plate 51, and the spring 60 has one end secured to the roller 57 and the other end secured to a collar 62 fixed to the shaft 56. A gear segment 58, Fig. 4, secured to the punch carrier meshes with a pinion 59 fixed to one end of the shaft 56, thereby holding the roller 57 off the web when the punch carrier is in its upward position. When the punch carrier starts its downward movement, the roller 57 engages the sheet to be cut off. The sheet prevents the roller from turning so that continued downward movement of the punch carrier causes the gear segment 58 to rotate the pinion 59 with respect to the roller 57 thereby winding the spring 60. As soon as the sheet is cut off, the roller 57 turns under the action of the spring 60 and ejects the cut-off sheet. A roller 29, Fig. 4, is provided beneath the roller 57 to reduce friction opposing ejection of the cut-off sheet. When the punch carrier starts its upward movement, the gear segment 58 rotates the roller 57 until a pin 65, Fig. 5, engages one arm of the bracket 54. The gear segment then lifts the entire roller assembly 55 from the web thus providing clearance for the next web advance. The extreme upward movement of the roller assembly is limited by a stop lug 70 extending into the path of the other arm of the bracket 54. A pin 73, Fig. 5, extending from the roller 57 co-operates with a cutaway roller 71 to limit the rotation of the roller 57.
