Abstract

In a gas cooled nuclear reactor, the heat capacity of the coolant gas is increased by the addition of small particles maintained in suspension in the gas. The particles are injected into the gas stream through 4 fluidizing device from a container. In the embodiment, carbon dioxide is pumped through channels in the graphite moderator of the reactor core. Graphite particles of from 10 to 50 microns in diameter are introduced into the gas between the pump and reactor inlet. On shutting down, the particles are removed from the gas by a cyclone device and load variations during running are accompanied by variation of the coolant flow rate or of the concentration of particles in the gas. Beryllium particles may be used in place of the graphite.
