Abstract
824,343. Analogue computors. COMPAGNIE FRANCAISE THOMSON-HOUSTON. Sept. 10, 1956 [Sept. 9, 1955], No. 27619/56. Class 37. A potentiometer device for enabling the value of a function of two independent variables to be represented by a potential difference is constructed by printed-circuit methods. An insulating base is covered by a conducting material and equipotential lines of the function are marked on this surface with suitably chosen axes for the two independent variables. The conducting surface is then etched away along the marked equipotentials. A pick-up probe is arranged to traverse the surface according to the varying values of the independent variables and each portion of conducting material remaining is given an electric potential (by means of a divider network) in accordance with the value of the function at the point (see Fig. 1). In the above embodiment the pick-up probe should be large enough to contact three conducting areas at once when suitably placed. An improvement is described where the conducting areas are covered by a material of relatively high resistance (Fig. 3) and the potentials applied to the conducting areas adjusted to compensate for any current flow through the surface covering. A continuous function is now achieved and a point-contact pick-up may be used. It is stated that the surface may be flat, cylindrical or annular and may be scanned linearly or angularly.
