Abstract

Compositions comprise thermoplastic polyvinyl or polyvinylidene resins containing alkoxy or phenoxy aluminium acylates, alkoxy or phenoxy hydroxy aluminium acylates, oxoaluminium acylates, or condensation products thereof. The resins may be polyvinyl acetate, hydrolysed polyvinyl acetate, polymethyl acrylate, polymethyl methacrylate; copolymers of vinyl acetate with vinyl stearate, methyl, ethyl, butyl, amyl, octyl or lauryl maleates or fumarates, or methyl, ethyl, butyl, amylhexyl or octyl acrylates; terpolymers of vinyl acetate, vinyl chloride and maleic or fumaric esters, e.g. dibutyl maleate; of vinyl acetate, vinyl chloride and methyl, ethyl, butyl or octyl acrylates; of vinyl acetate, acrylonitrile and allyl acrylate, octyl acrylate or ethylhexyl acrylate; and polymers of vinyl stearate, oleate and butyrate and vinyl ether esters. Preferred aluminium compounds are those in which the phenoxy groups are derived from phenol or cresols and the acylate radicals from saturated and unsaturated monocarboxylic fatty acids from formic to stearic acid, naphthenic acids, hexahydrobenzoic acid, benzoic acid and abietic and other rosin acids. Those exemplified are hydroxy isopropoxy aluminium oleate and the dimer thereof formed by the elimination of isopropyl alcohol. The compositions may contain plasticizers, e.g. dioctyl phthalate, dioctyl sebacate, p tricresyl phosphate and dicyclohexyl phthalate, and pigments and fillers, e.g. titanium dioxide, whiting and asbestos. The compositions may be used to form moulded or extruded products and floor and wall coverings, either as unsupported sheets or tiles or applied to asphalt-saturated felt.
