Abstract

824,322. Protective arrangements. SIEMENS-SCHUCKERTWERKE A.G. June 11, 1956 [June 10, 1955], No. 18034/56. Class 38 (5). A directional relay which responds to changes in direction of either the voltage or the current in a line comprises two Hall generators, the magnetic fields of which are phase-displaced 90 degrees from each other and each proportional to the line current, and the control currents of which are also displaced 90 degrees from each other and each is proportional to the line voltage. The Figures shows the two Hall generators 21 and 22. Input terminals 30 and 31 are connected to the secondary of a current transformer, through the primary of which flows the line current, to provide the magnetic fields, the phase displacement being effected by capacitor 241 and resistor 242. A current proportional to the line voltage is supplied to input terminals 32 and 33 to supply the control currents, phase displacement being effected by capacitor 25 and resistor 26. The Hall outputs are connected in series to provide a voltage equal to e i sin<SP>2</SP> # + e i cos<SP>2</SP> #. The summation current is then a pure direct current which flows through a control device 3 such as a direct current relay to guard against or indicate a change in direction of the line current or voltage. The Hall semi-conductor material may consist of A III B v compounds such as indium antimonide or indium arsenide.
