Abstract
Polythioureas of the formula (-R-NH-CS-NH-)n where R is -Ar- or -Ar-Z-Arsubstituted by a sulphonic acid group, and in which -Arrepresent a phenylene-(1 : 4) residue, Z is a divalent hydrocarbon radical having less than 3 carbon atoms or -NH-, -S- or -S-S-, and n is such that the molecular weight of the compound is greater than 1000, and each residue R is bound to a further thiourea group -NH-CS-NH- or to a free amino group, and salts of these polythioureas with alkali or alkaline earth metals or ammonia. The compounds may be made by reacting a diamine H2N-R-NH2 with a dihalide of thiocarbonic acid. In the example, 4,41-diaminostilbene-2,21-disulphonic acid is reacted with thiophosgene in aqueous caustic soda containing sodium acetate to produce products of the formula <FORM:0824281/IV (a)/1> in which terminal stilbene disulphonic acid residues are bound to free amino groups. The polythioureas may be used with carriers, e.g. water, gelatine, lactose, gum, starches, magnesium stearate, talc, vegetable oils, benzyl alcohols, polyalkylene glycols, white petroleum jelly and cholesterol as pharmaceutics.ALSO:Pharmaceutical preparations for enteral, parenteral or topical administration comprise organic or inorganic carriers and compounds of the general formula (-R-NH-CS-NH-)n where R is -Ar- or -Ar-Z.Arsubstituted by a sulphonic acid group, and in which -Ar-represents a phenylene-(1 : 4) residue, Z is a divalent hydrocarbon radical having less than 3 carbon atoms or -NH, -S- or -S-S-, and n is such that the molecular weight of the compound is greater than 1000, and each residue R is bound to a further thiourea group -NH -CS-NH or to a free amino group, and salts of these polythioureas with alkali or alkaline earth metals or ammonia, together with an organic or inorganic pharmaceutical carrier. Cholesterol gums, vegetable oils, petroleum jelly polyalkylene glycol and benzyl alcohol are specified as a carrier. The preparations may also contain anti-bacterial or anti-virus substances and may be made up as tablets, dragees, salves, creams or as solutions, suspensions or emulsions.
