Abstract
823,907. Cutting bars of extruded scrap &c. MIAG MUEHLENBAU UND INDUSTRIE G.m.b.H. Jan. 13, 1958 [Jan. 14, 1957], No. 1118/58. Class 87(2). A machine for cutting pieces from a bar of extruded material, e.g. soap, comprises cutters carried in radial slots in a pair of intermittently rotating discs whereby consecutive cutters are brought into position. Each cutting wire 7 is gripped in a holder 27 which spans the distance between two discs, Fig. 1, and is movable in radial slots 4 inches in each. The bar A to be cut is moved beneath the cutter by belts 15, 16 and through a beam of light passing from an emitter 18 to a receiver 17, the circuit for which is closed by a cam 4<SP>1</SP> on the disc operating a contact 43. Interruption of the light beam causes a photoelectric cell to operate an electromagnet 44 and pull down a bridge piece 45, rods 24, projecting therefrom, thus descending and, through rollers 47, pressing down the cutter holder 27 against the pull of springs 27<SP>1</SP>. Chains 49 are secured to the rods 24 and, on their descent, rotate sprocket wheels 52 and ratchet wheels 51, both freely rotatable on the axle 1 of the discs. When the wire has cut through the bar its holder 27 operates a contact 60 in the circuit of the electromagnet 44 and the springs 50 return the rods 24 and bridge piece 45 to their initial position and at the same time, through the action of the ratchet wheels 51 on pawls 53 which are mounted on the discs, move the discs to bring the next cutter (not shown) into position, while the preceding cutter holder is guided onwards by a cam 54. To control the angle of the cut the frame on which the mechanism is mounted is movable round pivots 55 by a crank 59 and toothed wheel and segment 58, 57. In an alternative arrangement, Fig. 2, the impulse from the photo-electric cell 12 operates an electromagnet 32 to retract a bolt 31 from beneath a detent 26 on an arm 25 which projects from a rod 24 associated with each cutter, which is thereupon actuated by a spring 34, a damper 35 absorbing shock. The rod 24 is linked to a lever system 17,19,20 whereby, on the descent of the rod, a wheel 6, freely rotatable on the axle 4, causes a pawl 7 to ride over one tooth of a ratchet wheel 5., At the end of the cutting stroke a contact arm 28 closes a contact 30 and, through a contactor 33, operates an electromagnet 36 which restores the lever system 17, 19, 20 moving back the wheel 6, and raises the rods 24 of the cutter, the current through the electromagnet 36 being maintained through a second contact 27 which was closed by another contact arm 29 at the start of the down stroke. The backward movement of the wheel 6 causes the pawl 7 to rotate the discs 2 with the result that, as the rods 24 rise, rollers 3 thereon are guided by cam 11 designed so that the cut surfaces are not damaged and the next cutter holder is guided by a cam 13 into position to start operation, the belt 31 resuming its blocking position beneath the detent 26.
