Abstract
823,854. Etching; printing surfaces. QUOD BONUM, N.V. Jan. 11, 1956 [Jan. 14, 1955], No 1014/56. Class 100(2) A method of retouching an etched design in an intaglio printing forme by changing the depth of the etching includes the steps of depositing at least one auxiliary metal layer either on the whole area to be retouched and then depositing an insulating layer on one of the surface elements, i.e. cavities or lands, or, after insulating one of the surface elements, on the non-insulated surface element depositing on or removing metal from the non- insulated surface element, and either removing the insulating layer or, after removing the insulating layer, removing metal from the previously insulated surface. In one example the cavities in an etched copper intaglio printing cylinder were filled with an insulating, acid resistant paste of wax and asphalt lacquer, a stencil was glued to the area to be corrected and the surround area was covered with an insulating lacquer. After removal of the stencil, copper was either galvanically or chemically precipitated on to the uncovered portion of the cylinder, thus heightening the land portions. In a second example the lands were insulated with offset ink and copper precipitated in the cavities. In another example a layer of nickel is deposited both on the area to be corrected and on the surrounding area of a copper intaglio cylinder. Copper was then deposited on an area larger than the area to be corrected which was then surrounded by a stencil and the lands in the area insulated. The area was then etched with a chromic acid-sulphuric acid solution which dissolves the copper but not the nickel. The area to be corrected was then entirely covered with a resist, the stencil removed, and the copper in the surrounding area etched away. Alternatively the cavities and not the lands may be insulated. In the case of chromium plated cylinders an intermediate layer of nickel cobalt is deposited thereon and thereafter a layer of copper or nickel.
