Abstract
Steam-stripped liquid hydrocarbon distillates boiling in the range 150-400 DEG C. are dried by introducing the moist distillate into a liquid/vapour separation zone where it is maintained for at least 30 seconds as a relatively thin layer of less than 12 cms. in depth, removing resultant vapours comprising water and lighter hydrocarbons, condensing these and separating the two layers formed, returning the hydrocarbon layer to the liquid/vapour separation zone and discarding the water and recovering the dried hydrocarbon distillate. The temperature of the distillate should preferably be within the lower half of its boiling range and conditions are such that 1-5% by weight of the distillate is removed as vapours. A slight vacuum is maintained by the condensation of the vapours but a further slight vacuum can be induced. The water content is reduced from 0.06-0.1% to 0.005-0.01% by weight.
