Abstract

A process for removing impurities (especially V) from TiCl4 comprises contacting TiCl4 vapour with a solution or finely divided suspension of an organic reagent which contains a chain of -CH2- groups, at an elevated temperature, and thereafter condensing the TiCl4 vapour to recover the purified product. The solution may contain 0.03 to 10% by weight of the organic reagent which may be a fat, ester, modified fat, resin polymer, tar, petroleum oil, chlorinated hydrocarbon, paraffin petroleum residue. Preferably the solution consists of a soap dissolved in liquid TiCl4 maintained at a temperature between 90 DEG C. and the boiling point of the TiCl4. Suitable apparatus appears in a figure (not shown) in which the TiCl4 vapour and the organic solution are contacted in countercurrent.
