Abstract

A rust preventive and/or lubricating concentrate comprises 30 to 50 wt. per cent of a mixture of sodium and barium soap of oxidized petrolatum and 10 to 25 wt. per cent of an oil-soluble mono- or di-alkyl phosphate, or mixtures of the two, the alkyl radicals therein containing a total of 3 to 40 carbon atoms; the remainder of the concentrate being oil. The preferred descriptions and/or concentrations of the constituents are as follows: the ratio of sodium to barium is 0.5 to 20.0 parts by weight; the soap has an acid number of 4 to 20 mg. KOH/g. of soap and a saponification number of 10 to 60 mg. KOH/g. of soap; the soap is prepared from an oxidized petrolatum having a saponification number of about 60 to 110 and an acid number of about 20 to 50; the alkyl phosphate is the product of reacting 3 to 5 molecular proportions of C3-C20 alkanol with one molecular proportion of phosphorus pentoxide (P2O5); the oil is a non-volatile animal, vegetable, mineral or synthetic oil. This concentrate is utilized by addition of water to form a composition comprising a major proportion of water, preferably 60 to 99 wt. per cent of water and 1 to 40 wt. per cent of concentrate. In an example an emulsion contains 88 wt. per cent of water and 12% concentrate; the latter comprises 5 parts by weight of a mixed sodium/barium soap of oxidized petrolatum, said soap having a sodium: barium ratio of 3.8 : 1 by weight, and having an acid number of 12.1, a saponification number of 31.4 and having been prepared from an oxidized petrolatum which has an acid number of 28 and a saponification number of 93; the concentrate comprises also 2 parts by weight of a mixture of mono- and di-C8-oxo phosphate from reaction of 1 mol. P2O5 and 4 mols. C8 oxo alcohol, and 5 parts by weight of a mineral oil, specifically a naphthenic coastal distillate, viscosity 105 S.U.S. at 100 DEG F. or 39 S.U.S. at 210 DEG F.
