Abstract

823,058. Suspending cables. BRITISH INSULATED CALLENDER'S CABLES Ltd., and BRITISH INSULATED CALLENDER'S CONSTRUCTION CO. Ltd. Feb. 8, 1957 [Feb. 10, 1956; Aug. 8, 1956; Nov. 27, 1956], Nos. 4316/56, 24341/56 and 36285/56. Class 36. [Also in Group XXV] A suspending means for a contact wire of an overhead traction system incorporates a clip comprising a pair of metal clamping members shaped at one end to form either a pair of jaws for gripping a contact wire or a pair of jaws for gripping a catenary cable and joined together or adapted to bear against each other at the opposite end in such a way that the jaws are movable towards and away from each other and that when the contact wire or catenary cable is gripped between the jaws, parts of the outer surfaces of the members diverge as the jaws are approached and a locking-ring having an aperture of such size and shape that it can embrace both clamping members and can be slid along their diverging parts towards the jaws into a clamping position on which by resilient deflection of the clamping members it causes the contact wire or catenary cable to be securely gripped between the jaws, the ring being retained against accidental displacement from the clamping position by means consisting of or including shaped parts of the outer surfaces of the clamping members. As shown in Fig. 1, the clamping members 2, 3 bear against each other and the ring 4 is retained against accidental displacement from the clamping position by inwardly joggled seats 9, 10. Auxiliary seats 11, 12 are also formed on the clamping members with which the locking-ring can be temporarily engaged ; in such a position the jaws engage the wire or cable but do not grip it so that the clip can be slid along. The members are formed with apertures 13, 14 through which a wire dropper loop can be passed. As shown, the jaws 5, 6 are arcuate for gripping a catenary cable; when the clip is intended to grip a contact wire the jaws are turned inwardly and are shaped to fit into side grooves in the contact wire. In a modification, Fig. 9, the jaws are formed with extensions 31, 32 which have interlocking lateral projections 33, 34 which prevent the clamping members springing apart when the locking ring is moved from the clamping position. This construction is suitable only for engaging a catenary cable. In an alternative construction, Fig. 10, which shows clamping members 41, 42 joined together, the locking-ring 40 is provided with two fingers 43, 44 which engage recesses 45, 46 in the clamping members 41, 42 to hold the ring in the clamping position. The fingers can be forced sideways by hand from the recesses to release the ring. Tongues 47, 48 are also attached to the ring to reinforce the clamping jaws 49, 50. In the first construction the ring instead of having a single aperture can have two apertures, one for each clamping member.
