Abstract

823,034. Capacitors. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. May 20, 1957 [May 18, 1956], No. 15606/56. Class 37. A capacitor assembly comprises wound electrodes completely embedded in a hollow cylindrical body of thermoplastic material which also constitutes the dielectric, the body embracing a core having a terminal-carrying member of non-conductive material attached to or integral with it. Figs. 1, 2 show a core 1 and a tag-plate 8 both moulded from high-density polyethylene, polystyrene or phenolic resin. Both members are formed with axial holes 2 through which a bolt may be passed. The core 1 is also provided with a cylindrical recess 3 in each end and slots 4 which correspond to the projections 9, 10 of the tag plate 8. The capacitor 6 is wound on the core 1 preferably from strips of aluminium foil and wider strips of stretched polystyrene; a connecting-strip 33 of copper foil being spot-welded or soldered to each electrode half-way along its length. The roll is then heated to between 100‹ and 110‹ C. to cause the dielectric to contract and embed the electrodes in a hollow cylindrical mass. A gap is left between the capacitor 6 and the tag-plate 8 to allow circulation of air and provides space for the leads 33 which are finally soldered to copper wires 34 embedded in the tag-plate. Series or parallel combinations may be formed by mounting a plurality of such capacitors, each with its tag-plate 8, co-linearly on one bolt. Tag plates having projections such as 9, 10 extending from both sides are then advantageous. The capacitor may alternatively be wound on a mandrel (such as that described in Specification 823,033) that is removed after heat treatment. In this case an integral core and tag-plate shown in Fig. 4 may be used. The outer end of the core is flanged at 28 and is cut into four sections which may be compressed inwards to allow passage into the capacitor 24. Shoulders 25 allow space for air circulation and for outlets of leads 32. A similar form of integral core, Fig. 3, not shown, is moulded from polystyrene and has a plain outer end burred over with a hot iron to retain the winding. A suitable pattern may be impressed into the outer end to locate a second tag-plate or a further capacitor.
