[Also in Group XXXVI] An electric capacitor is made by winding strips of metal foil interleaved with plastic strips, some or all of the strips being passed through an arrangement of insulating members during winding so as to wipe one or both surfaces of each strip. The Figure shows a dustproof enclosure 11 housing reels of metal strips 7, 8 and of plastic strips 9, 10. The strips are withdrawn from the box 11 passing between plastic rods 14 and over rollers before being wound on the mandrel 5 to form a capacitor 6. The rods 14, which may be of polystyrene have a diameter of about <SP>1</SP>/ 16 of an inch and are held by their ends in vertical slots 15. The metal foils may be of aluminium and the plastic strip, which should be slightly wider than the metal foil may be of polyethylene terephthalate and may be pre-stretched. At suitable intervals in the winding, lead out connections, which may be of copper wire, are spot-welded to the metal foil. A roller may be arranged to bear on the capacitor so as to exclude air bubbles and after winding leads are provided and the capacitor may be heat treated.
