Abstract

The properties of adducts obtained from urea and straight-chain paraffin hydrocarbons or from thiourea and branched-chain paraffin hydrocarbons or naphthenes in the absence of activators are improved (i.e. the grain size is coarsened) by adding water to the adduct formed in an amount corresponding to at least 10% and at most 40% by weight, based on the amount of urea or thiourea initially added; in the presence of up to 10% by weight of water functioning as an activator, the amount of water subsequently added must bring the total water content above 10% but not exceeding 40% by weight, based on the amount of urea or thiourea initially added; in the presence of up to 10% by weight of other activators (such as C1-5 alcohols), the amount of water subsequently added must be at least 10% by weight and the maximum quantity of water added must be such as not to exceed a combined weight of 40% for water plus activator, based on the amount of urea or thiourea initially added. The addition of water may be carried out in stages, the granular adduct which is obtained being mashed with an oil solvent and the grains crushed by intense stirring before coarsening the grain again by renewed addition of water and subsequent separation of the adduct from the oil solution.
