Abstract

A process of forming a fluorescent coating composition comprises forming an emulsion or suspension polymerization product of vinyl chloride, dyeing the product without intermediate drying thereof with a solution of a fluorescent dye, and thereafter dispersing the resultant dyed particulate resin in a liquid vehicle. The vinyl chloride may be co-polymerized with vinylidene chloride, vinyl acetate, vinyl alcohol or acrylonitrile. Suitable dyes are 3 : 6 - bis - diethyl (or ethyl) - 9 - (21 - carboxy phenyl)-xanthenyl chloride; 4-amino-1 : 8-naphthalic acid-41-(11-methyl anilide); Auramine G; or the chloromethyl derivative of dimethyl dihydrothio p-toluidine. Suitable vehicles are poly-alkyl methacrylates, chlorinated or cyclized rubber, alkyd resins, polystyrene, rosin, and mixtures with vegetable oils; also suitable are aqueous solutions of colloids such as gelatin, starch, alginates, methyl or carboxymethyl cellulose, and of film-forming materials such as vinyl or acrylic resins. Non-fluorescent extenders such as white titanium dioxide or colourless silica or calcium carbonate, may be added. The dyed resin may contain 0.5-5% dyestuff (0.5-1.5% in the case of magenta) and 1-2 parts of the resin may be mixed with one part of vehicle. Examples are given of (a) a matt ink for silk-screen processes with an alkyd resin vehicle and 0.1-1% lead or calcium naphthenate as drier, (b) a coating composition with methyl butyl methacrylate copolymer as vehicle, (c) an aqueous coating composition with polyvinyl acetate vehicle, (d) an ink for aniline printing processes with a solution of 4 - amino - 1 : 8 - naphthalic acid - 41 - phenylanilide sodium sulphonate in ethyl cellulose as vehicle.
