Abstract
822,471. Semi-conductor devices. THORN ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. June 7, 1957 [June 7, 1956], No. 17666/56. Class 37. [Also in Group XL (c)] An amplifier or modulator comprises a body 13 of non-linear resistive material with two pairs of electrodes for applying suitably transverse electric fields, a signal being applied across one pair 11, 12, and a unidirectional voltage being applied across the other pair 14. As shown in Fig. 1, the output is taken from electrodes 14. In an alternative arrangement, three pairs of electrodes are applied to provide three mutually transverse fields, a signal being applied to each of two pairs so that a modulated output may be taken from the third pair. The body material may consist of silicon carbide bonded with a synthetic resin, a unidirectional electric field being applied while the resin is setting. The Provisional Specification refers to the use of a layer of non-linear resistive material such as silicon carbide between the photo-conductive layer and electroluminescent layer of a light amplifier.
