Abstract

821,066. Vehicle power steering. HURWICZ, A. Sept. 26, 1956 [Sept. 28, 1955], No. 29410/56. Class 79(5) A pneumatic power steering device comprises a piston and cylinder assembly 10 pivoted to the vehicle front axle 1 and acting on a steerable stub axle 2, the flow of air to the assembly 10 being controlled by two pairs of valves 21 arranged on both sides of a ball 7<SP>1</SP> on an arm 7 connected to the axle 2 and disposed within. a hollow drag link 9, the valves being actuated by movement of the link to initiate power steering. As further shown the invention is applied to a steering mechanism comprising the drag link 9 connected to the arm 7 on the stub axle 2 which is connected by a track rod 6 to another stub axle 3, the stub axles being pivoted at 4, 5 to the axle 1. The assembly 10 interconnects the axle 1 and a steering arm 3<SP>1</SP> on the axle 3, the ends of the assembly being connected by conduits 15, 16 and the valves to a compressed air supply pipe 27. The arm 7 passes through a slot 17 in the link 9 and the ball end 7<SP>1</SP> bears against complementary shaped members 18, 18<SP>1</SP> urged into position by springs 19, 19<SP>1</SP> abutting plugs 20 in the link 9. Disposed in each spring 19, 19<SP>1</SP> is a pair of the valves comprising a body secured to the associated plug 20 and a stem 24 urged against the associated member 18, 18<SP>1</SP> by a spring 28. The valve stem 24 carries discs 25, 26 adapted to co-operate with apertures 22, 23 arranged between compartments a, b, c in the valve body, the disc being so shaped that the chamber b can be selectively isolated from the compartments a, c. The compartment a is connected to the supply pipe 27, the compartment b with the conduit 15 or 16 and the compartment c with atmosphere. In operation, manual control of the steering gear (not shown) causes the link 9 to be moved forwardly or backwardly whereby the link 9 moves relatively to the arm 7' to actuate the valves whereby one end of the assembly 10 is connected to the compressed air supply and the other end is connected to exhaust, thereby giving power steering. It is stated that road shocks causes the valves to be actuated to counteract the shocks.
