Abstract

820,867. Sandwich wafers. SCRIBBANS-KEMP Ltd. Aug. 22, 1957 [Aug. 30, 1956], No. 20496/56. Class 28 (1). [Also in Group XVI] Wafer sandwiches are made by feeding a coated wafer from a conveyer 3 on to edge supports 4 feeding a plain wafer from a conveyer 9 on to edge supports 10 above, pivoting down the edge supports 10 to drop the wafer on to the coated wafer, then pivoting down the edge supports 4 to drop the combined wafers on to edge supports 8 which then pivot down to drop the sandwich on to a carry away conveyer 2, all in timed relation by feelers and stops. There may be more than one coated wafer, finally covered by a plain wafer. Air jets 12 help to blow down the plain wafer. The shelf device may be enclosed and heated or parts only may be heated by electric heating or hot air may be passed through. Excess filling may pass through slots in the edge supports. When a wafer hits a stop plate 5, Fig. 3, it operates a microswitch 7 to hinge down the edge supports. A stop plate 15 prevents rebound back of the wafer. A shock absorber linked to 5 prevents breaking of the wafer, the shock absorber comprising a dashpot. The edge supports are hinged down and then up by air cylinders controlled by solenoid operated air valves. The micro-switch 7 may trigger a thyratron single stroke multivibrator or flip-flop 21, Fig. 5, whereupon air valve 22 is energized to admit air into cylinder 23 causing the side supports to retract. After a time air valve 22 is closed and the side supports pivot up to receiving position. Each time 21 is operated two signals are fed in to the storage circuit 24. Dekatron type multicathode counting valve, to initiate further operations according to the number of wafers entering the laminator, e.g. Fig. 6, for three superposed coated wafers and one superposed top plain wafer. A pulse 31, Fig. 6, from circuit 21 is fed to storage circuit 24. A further pulse is also fed to 24 as the supports 4 pivot up. The storage circuit 24 may be pre-set by a rotary switch to produce any number of coated layer sandwiches. The conveyer 9 may be driven by a clutch 20 closed in desired timed relation and it may be stopped by a beam of light 18 on a photo-electric cell 16. Another light beam through a broken wafer may be used to stop the machine. Specification 793,732, [Group XVI], is referred to.
