Abstract

818,015. Stacking and unstacking. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. Oct. 31, 1957 [Nov. 3, 1956], No. 33617/56. Class 94(1). [Also in Groups XXX and XL(a)] A mechanism for stacking and unstacking a series of flat bodies, in particular, trays 18 carrying in holes 19 radioactive samples or radiation absorbers, comprises a pair of hollow cylindrical cams 1, 2 rotatable by a shaft 3 through a gear train 4. Each cam is a mirror image of the other and has a helical portion 5 and a portion 7 parallel to the rotational axis. The trays are located for feeding to and from the cams by a horizontal guide having a floor 8 and sides 9, the floor being slotted at 10 and the sides 9 extending within the cams. Vertical guides 15a, 16a locate the trays in a stack above the cams 1, 2 the lower-most tray resting on the cylindrical cam surface 17, there being space beneath the guide 16a to permit the passage of the trays 18 along the guide floor 8. Considering an unstacking operation, the cams are rotated in the direction U whereby the cam portions 7 lower the bottom tray on to the floor 8 and the helical cam portions 5 engage the corners of the tray to eject it from the stack, Fig. 4 (not shown). The following tray is similarly ejected upon the next revolution of the cams, this tray pushing the previously-ejected tray before it. Thus the trays may be unstacked one-by-one and pushed through a lead castle 20 containing a radiation counter. A similar mechanism (not shown) is provided on the other side of the castle its cams rotating in the opposite direction S so that the trays being pushed through the castle are stacked. During stacking a tray is pushed along the floor 8 up to the stop 15a and is then lifted by the cam portions 7. The two mechanisms are operated conjointly so that trays are moved in one direction through the castle in a dis-continuous manner, the stationary moments being long enough for the count to be made, the trays then being rapidly fed back in a continuous manner by reversal of the cams.
