Needle selection is made at each feeder of a multifeeder circular machine, for example, a superposed cylinder machine, by a selector unit, the bits 26 of which act on selecting jacks 25 which raise first intermediate jacks 20 so that their butts engage a raising cam 22 to cause them to raise second intermediate jacks 16 such that their butts are engaged by a further raising cam 17. The cam 17 raises the second intermediate jacks and consequently the needles through their abutment with the lower end of the sliders such that the needles are raised to a height whereat the yarn is fed beneath their latches. Each jack in turn is immediately returned to its lowered position after having been raised by its appropriate selector or cam 26, 22 or 17 by a lowering cam 29, 24 or 19 respectively. In addition to needle selection for yarn feeding mentioned above, needle selection may also be made prior to the main feeder for links-links patterning and operates in a similar manner such that the selected needles are transferred into the upper cylinder. A lower selector jack cam 27 is also provided in advance of each selector unit to bring the selector jacks to the correct height in which they engage the lower end of the first intermediate jacks. By providing butts 25b of varying length and appropriately positioning the cams 27 by operating them as bolt cams, further patterning selection can be achieved. The first intermediate jacks 20 are chamfered at their lower rear edges so that the butts 20b of those which are not selected are pressed inwardly causing the jacks to pivot by engaging the face of the raising cam 22, the leading edge of which is appropriately bevelled to accommodate the butts. A recessed portion 23a is provided in the upper guide cam 23 to permit the upper portion of the jacks 20 to pivot outwardly when the butts 20b are depressed.
