Abstract
820,805. Metal-vapour discharge apparatus. PHILIPS ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. May 18, 1956 [May 21, 1955], No. 15579/56. Class 39(1). [Also in Group XL(c)] An electric discharge tube 1 comprising a liquid cathode 2, main anode 3 and auxiliary anode 4 is ignited by the application to a resistance ignition electrode 5 of a composite impulse produced by the discharge through a controllable tube 6 of an artificial line, comprising a coil 8 and condensers 11 to 21, which is terminated in a non-inductive resistor 7 and is charged by means of a rectifier tube 9 fed by a transformer 10. The condenser 11 has a higher capacity than condensers 12 to 21 which are all of equal value, so that the composite impulse consists of a first part of short duration but of more than sufficient amplitude to ignite the cathode spot, and a second part of much smaller amplitude but of sufficient duration to permit the anode 3 of the tube 1 to take over the discharge. The duration of the whole impulse is short (e.g. 55 microseconds) relative to the period of the usual A.C. mains supply.
