Abstract

An astringent and antiperspirant composition comprises an aluminium chlorhydroxy complex having from 4 to 7 atoms of aluminium per 3 atoms of chlorine, water in an amount to disperse the aluminium compound to form a non-gelling solution and one or more alkaline compounds chosen from the oxides and/or hydroxides of the alkali metals, alkaline earth metals, ammonium and magnesium and for salts thereof having a pH above about 6.5 in aqueous IN solution selected from the bicarbonates, carbonates, phosphates, sulphates, aluminates, acetates, propionates, glutamates, tartrates and citrates, in an amount within the range from 0.04 to 0.2 equivalent weight, calculated on the alkali hydroxide per atom of aluminium present as aluminium chlorhydroxy complex, the dispersion being capable of being converted into an alcogel by the addition of an alcohol. Water is present in an amount of from 2 to 4 parts per part by weight of the aluminium chlorhydroxy complex. A water-soluble non-toxic alcohol may be added in a proportion of 25 to 300 volumes for each 100 volumes of the remainder of the composition. Specified are methanol, ethanol, dipropylene glycol and a polyethylene glycol of molecular weight 200 to 600. Optional ingredients are eucalyptus oil, menthol and pine oil. The product may be evaporated to dryness to yield a material that is dispersable in water.
