Abstract

An alloying constituent which melts at a high temperature, such as manganese, copper, nickel or chromium, is introduced into a metal melt in the form of a briquette which contains the alloying constituent as a powder and a salt as refining substance which, after introduction of the briquette, gives off a gas or vapour in amount sufficient to cause spontaneous disruption of the briquette and dispersion of the alloying constituent throughout the melt, the refining substance serving to purify the melt. The salt is preferably one which evolves chlorine, and may wholly or partly consist of a chloride of an alloying constituent such as manganese chloride which is used with powdered manganese or nickel. Lead chloride may be used with powdered nickel. Other salts of the same acid as the refining salt may also be present, e.g. sodium chloride and/or potassium chloride. The briquette may also contain substances capable of dissolving a deoxidation product, e.g. a fluoride.
