[Also in Groups XXV and XXXV] A capstan device for hauling steel cables, flexible steel strip, iron wire or the like comprises a cable-engaging member 7, Fig. 2, and means 1 disposed within the member to provide a magnetic field having a component normal to the external surface of the member and thus tending to retain the cable in contact with that surface. Fig. 4 shows two capstans keyed to a non-magnetic spindle 15 in a machine for making cables for flexible drives. Rollers 19 guide the cables on to the members 7 each of which consists of a thin strip of brass surrounding a series of interdigitated poles 5 separated by air gaps 6, the strip being anchored to a cutaway portion 8 and to a roller 10 which may be adjusted by a slotted quadrant (not shown) to tighten the strip. The poles 5 are supported by a brass ring 14 and are integral with members 2, 3 held in contact with opposite ends of a hollow cylindrical permanent magnet 1 by four bolts 4 of non-magnetic material such as brass or non-magnetic stainless steel. The poles 5 may be magnetised by an exciting winding and may not extend around the entire circumference of the capstan.
