819,983. Making heat exchangers; jointing by tube expanding. USINES CHAUSSON S.A., DES. July 16, 1957 [Aug. 16, 1956], No. 22509/57. Classes 83 (2) and 83 (4). A device for engaging tubes 3 in rows of spaced gills 2 and for expanding the ends of these tubes in collectors 14, 29 of a radiator cluster, comprises a magazine holding gills 2 between a perforated plate 27, which carries the collector 29, and a sliding carriage 6, which carries the second collector 14 and tools 15 to expand the tubes inside this latter collector, the tubes being engaged by tools 32 integral with push-rods 34 which expand the ends of previously engaged tubes inside the first collector 29. The tools 32 have shoulders 32b to engage the tubes and insert them successively through. the perforated plate 27 into the gills as the whole assembly on a base plate 1 is moved laterally step by step. Simultaneously with the insertion of the tubes, those tubes engaged by the previous step are expanded tightly into collectors 29, 14 by the push-rods 34 spaced from the tools 32 by the distance between two consecutive tubes and attached to them by struts 33. The number of tools 32 and of push-rods 34 is equal to the number of tubes in a vertical row. During engagement, the tubes are guided by perforations formed by the teeth 27 1 , 27 2 of the two-part perforated plate 27, which also supports the collector 29 in slider 31. Further toothed guide flanges 23 and 24, which also retain the collector 14 are attached to the carriage 6 and base plate 1 respectively. After completion the radiator cluster is released by lifting the upper half of the perforated plate 27 and the plate 18 carrying the flange 23 and then sliding back the carriage 6 in grooves 4 by operating a lever 11 attached to a crank 9 and a connecting rod 7.
