Abstract
819,722. Gas turbine plant. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO. Ltd. Oct. 19, 1956 [Oct. 27, 1955], No. 30787/55. Class 110 (3). [Also in Group XII] An apparatus for generating a flow of gaseous working fluid for a prime mover such as a turbine starter for an internal combustion engine or gas turbine comprises a reaction chamber 1 into which monofuel is injected for decomposition therein. The pressure for monofuel injection is obtained by connecting the reaction chamber to a double-acting pressure intensifier 3 and using the increased pressure derived therefrom for monofuel injection. The pressure intensifier is arranged so that while fuel is being forced into the reaction chamber during a stroke in one direction, fuel is simultaneously inducted into the intensifier for subsequent injection into the reaction chamber during a stroke in the reverse direction. The reaction chamber 1 is connected by means of a duct 9 and change-over valve 8 to the pressure intensifier 3 which comprises two pistons 5, 6 connected by a rod 7 and mounted in a cylinder, the rod 7 passing through a partition plate 4 disposed across the cylinder. The spaces above the pistons 5, 6 are supplied alternately with combustion gases through the valve 8, while the spaces between the pistons 5, 6 and the partition 4 are connectible to the monofuel tank 2 through ducts 11, 12 and non-return valves 13 and to the reaction chamber 1 through non-return valves 14, duct 15 and non- return valve 16. When the pistons 5, 6 are caused to move in the direction shown by arrow A, monofuel in the space below the piston 5 is forced through the right-hand non-return valve 14, duct 15 and non-return valve 16 to reaction chamber 1. At the same time monofuel is drawn into the space below the piston 6 from the tank 2 through the left-hand non-return valve 13 and duct 12. The valve 8 is then operated. whereby combustion gases pass to the space above the piston 6 and the pistons move in the opposite direction causing fuel in the space below the piston 6 to be discharged to the reaction chamber and fuel to be drawn into the space below the piston 5. The apparatus is started by means of a device 10 containing a cordite charge. An hydraulic accumulator 18 may be provided in the fuel supply line 15. An on-off switch 19 is provided which when in the open position causes monofuel to return to the tank 2. Specification 784,121 is referred to.
