Abstract

In a method of oxidizing substances in the liquid phase with atmospheric oxygen in the presence or absence of additional catalytic agents, the air used for effecting the oxidation is conducted over activated carbon a short distance before coming into contact with the substance to be oxidized. Air is passed through a filter containing activated carbon and then through the substance to be oxidized in a column, the carbon not being in contact with the substance. In examples, invert sugar in a solution of caustic soda is oxidized to form salts of polyoxy-carboxylic acids, molten paraffin wax is oxidized to acids with and without potassium permanganate being present, and ferrous sulphate in caustic soda solution is oxidized to ferric sulphate.ALSO:In a method of oxidizing substances in the liquid phase with atmospheric oxygen in the presence or absence of additional catalytic agents, the air used for effecting the oxidation is conducted over activated carbon a short distance before coming into contact with the substance to be oxidized.
