Abstract

<PICT:0784609/III/1> In concentrating aqueous nitric acid solutions of chemical substances, e.g. fission products, to reduce acidity, the heated aqueous solution of metal salts containing nitric acid at not exceeding 8N is reduced with formaldehyde, and the nitric oxide formed is passed in contact with further aqueous solution of the metal salts containing nitric acid at above 8N to decompose further acid and reduce acidity to not exceeding 8N. Formaldehyde as gas or aqueous solution may be used. The solution, containing fission producs, 8N nitric acid, and added electrolytes resulting from dissolving neutron-irradiated uranium in nitric acid and separating the majority of the uranium and plutonium, is introduced through pipe 6 into stainless steel boiler 1. The solution is heated by electric heater 2 while 35-40 per cent formaldehyde solution is added through 8. The nitric oxide formed, passes up ceramic packed column 3 countercurrent to further aqueous solution, 15N in nitric acid, introduced through spray 7 so that nitric acid is decomposed to nitrogen dioxide. The solution withdrawn through 10, 0.25N in nitric acid may be concentrated to 15N and returned to the system if desired.
