Abstract

Vinyl esters other than vinyl acetate are prepared by vinylating with acetylene in the vapour phase an aliphatic carboxylic acid other than acetic acid in the presence of active carbon impregnated with a zinc salt of a dibasic aliphatic carboxylic acid. Specified vinyl esters are those of propionic, butyric, valeric, methylcaproic and glutaric acids. The catalysts may be prepared as described in the parent application or by evaporating a solution of the zinc salt to dryness with active carbon. Examples describe the preparation of vinyl 2-methylcaproate using zinc adipate, zinc glutarate or zinc suberate as catalysts.
