Abstract

819,391. Mould materials. FORD MOTOR CO. Ltd. March 22, 1957 [May 7, 1956], No. 9413/57. Class 83 (1). A shell-moulding-method comprises the use of sodium-silicate as a binder, the mix being placed against a heated pattern and heated to a temperature of 400-550‹ F. The mix may be blown between the hot pattern and a hot back-up plate, or on to the pattern. The pattern is preferably heated to a temperature of 250- 550‹ F. to obviate the necessity for a parting medium, since at such temperatures the water in the mould mix boils out and forms a vapourcushion between the mould and the pattern. Inhibitors such as basic-metal salts, zinc oxide, potassium and sodium fluosilicates may be added to decrease the effect of humidity on tensile strength during storage. Up to 2 per cent of organics, such as coal tar, pitch, sea coal and asphalt to improve the green strength &c., and an oil lubricant such as 1/3 per cent of kerosene or soya-bean oil, may be added.
