The invention relates to apparatus for filling bottles or containers with gas-charged liquids, gas and gas-charged liquid being supplied successively to a bottle, and comprises the provision of a gas valve 44 and a liquid valve 60 closed automatically when pressure at the outlet side of the valves falls below a predetermined level. On a tank 10 of liquid under gas pressure the filling head 12 and nozzle 20 have a gas passage 22 leading to ports 36 in the filling nozzle and a liquid passage 18 leading to ports 34. A gas valve seating 38 is provided at the inlet end of gas passage 22 and the gas valve 44 is mounted for small vertical movement relative to a pivoted arm 46 spring urged towards the seating 38. The valve 44 is opened by a plunger 52 movable vertically by a rotary cam 56 secured to the end of a rotating spindle 58. The liquid valve 60 is urged away from its seating by a spring 62 and its movement is controlled by a second vertically movable plunger 64 in contact with the rotary cam 56. In operation the gas valve is first fully opened by plunger 52 allowing high pressure gas into the bottle. The gas valve is then partially closed, as shown, while the liquid valve is opened. The filling process is normally completed by closing simultaneously the liquid and gas valves, but if a breakage or a sudden drop of pressure should occur both valves will close automatically, the liquid valve 60 against the action of spring 62 and the gas valve 44 by moving relative to the arm 46. A light spring may be interposed between the valve 44 and the valve seating.
