Abstract
24,056. Schneider, A. Oct. 31. Bottling.-In a bottling-machine having a rotary tank and rotating bottle-support, the filling heads and tubes are lowered to engage the bottles, instead of mounting the bottles on platforms adapted to raise them successively into filling position. Connected with the tank 23, Fig. 1, are a number of cylinders 48, Figs. 1, 8, and 10, the upper ends of which are in constant communication by pipes 97 with the upper part of the tank. Within each cylinder are two pistons 89, 62, Fig. 8, carrying the filling-heads 49 and filling-tubes 50 respectively. The pistons are normally held in raised position by pressure, superior to the tank pressure, supplied from an independent source and admitted to the lower ends of the cylinders through pipes 27, the stem 22 of the machine, and pipes 98, under the control of plug cocks 100. During the rotation of the machine, the cocks are operated by two fixed tappets, one of which 113 is shown in Fig. 1, first, to vent the higher pressure and allow the filling-devices to descend, under the tank pressure, to engage the bottle to be filled, and secondly, to readmit the higher pressure on the completion of the filling, to raise the filling-devices and permit the bottle to be removed. The removal of the filled bottles is effected automatically by an arm 135. Liquid is supplied through a pipe 33 to the lower part of the tank, and from the tank by pipes 54 to annular chambers 55, Figs. 8 and 10, at the bottoms of the cylinders. Ports 58 in the upper part of the filling-tubes register with the chambers 55 when the filling-tubes are in lowered position, and admit the liquid to the bottles through other ports 59 at the lower ends of the tubes. In raised position, the ports 58 are sealed by a thimble 67 mounted in a block 65, and, to prevent access of pressure into the filling - tubes on the rising of the pistons, a spring is employed to hold the block 65 in lowered position until the ports 58 are housed within the thimble. To establish pressure in the bottle before the liquid is admitted, gas at tank pressure from the top of the cylinder is admitted to the filling-head through one of the tubular piston-rods 83 of the piston 89, and a port 80 controlled by a float valve 81, and passes into the bottle as soon as the filling- tube moves below the sealing-washer 74, that is, immediately after the downward movement of the filling-head has been arrested by the bottle. The tank is divided into separate liquid and gas chambers 44, 45, Fig. 15, which are closed by tight covers, adjustable independently of each other. A pressure-equalizer is provided comprising a cylinder 117 communicating with both chambers, and containing a piston 122 with ports, as shown. The cylinder has a vent nipple 127 and also a connexion at 125 with a suitable source of pressure supply.
