Class 79(3) [Also in Group XXXII] Refers to an articulated vehicle of which the forecarriage is a modification of an agricultural-type tractor having front wheel steering and rear driven wheels on half-shafts aligned with, and driven from, a differential gear. The four-wheel articulated vehicle's front, two - wheel, power unit 1 comprises a conventional tractor, as aforementioned, with the usual front wheel assembly and steering means omitted, the rear part of the tractor being modified so that the half-shafts 7 carrying the drive wheels 8 are vertically below the differential gear assembly 9. The assembly 9 is in a reinforced structure 12 with a top-member 12a that supports on brackets 13 a longitudinal pivot 4 that allows for lateral rolling movements also side-members 14 and a tow-bar 15 all attached to the front of the unit 1. The operator's compartment 14a is displaced to the side of the unit 1. For steering, hydraulic rams 17 and 18 controlled by a steering wheel 21 and mounted on brackets 3, and 5, are connected to arms 19 and 20 respectively that are keyed to a vertical pivot 6. The rear unit 2 may be dump-truck with a body 22 pivoted at 23 to arms 24 on the brackets 5 and with wheels 25 under an up-tilted floor 26. Hydraulic rams 27, connected between the arms 24 and the truck body, can tilt the body rearwards about the pivot 23. Fig. 5 (not shown) illustrates an alternative rear unit in which the structure 24a is cranked and pivoted to the truck's axle, so that the ram 27 causes the body to tilt about the axle.
