Abstract
818,349. Radio receiving systems; pulse radar. COMPAGNIE GENERALE DE TELEGRAPHIE SANS FIL. March 12, 1957 [March 28, 1956], No. 8097/57. Classes 40 (5) and 40 (7). In an arrangement for reducing the effects of interference in a receiver for pulses of highfrequency waves, e.g. a radar receiver, the receiver comprises two channels with their inputs fed with received pulses, one of the channels comprising a phase detector to which reference oscillations of the frequency of the waves in the input pulses are also fed, and the other channel containing an amplitude detector, the outputs of the two channels being combined to supply signals for utilization. As shown, the output of the intermediate frequency amplifier 6 is fed to two channels, one channel including a limiter 7, phase detector 8 with its reference oscillator 9 supplying a local oscillation of the same frequency as that of the incoming pulses and in a fixed phase relation with the desired signal, and a full-wave rectifier 10, and the other channel comprising an amplitude detector 11. The outputs of the two channels are combined at 12 and the overall gains in the two channels are such that the noise levels are substantially equal at the input to the combining circuit 12. It is stated that an improvement in the signal/noise ratio by a factor of #2 is obtained, the desired signals in the two channels, which are coherent, being combined additively, and the random noise outputs from the two channels being combined in quadrature.
