Abstract
818,311. Open-hearth furnace hearths. COLVILLES Ltd. Feb. 24, 1958 [Feb. 19, 1957], No. 5587/57. Class 51 (2). A method of laying the dolomite hearth lining of a basic open-hearth furnace comprises laying the dolomite and thereafter compacting it mechanically by a combined simultaneous rolling and vibrating tamping action. In building up the hearth lining a layer of dolomite 1 is placed on the bottom 2 and the vibrating- device 4 is used, first to roll it several times and then to give it a combined rolling and vibrating tamping action several more times. Further layers are then similarly applied to build up the required thickness and then the sides 5 are similarly treated to build up the shallow basin shape of the hearth. The device 4, Fig. 3 (not shown), is a conventional vibrating- roller device driven by a petrol engine giving a vibrator shaft speed of about 4,500 r.p.m. The density of the compacted lining is approximately 137 lbs./cu. ft.
