Abstract

Slags from blast furnaces and from the production of steel or the refining of pig iron, the latter containing lime, are poured in alternate layers on to a base of cooled blast furnace slag, each layer of steel or pig iron slag is thoroughly soaked with water and periodically the layered mass is opened up and levelled whilst subject to pressure. The layers may form a bed sloping down from the side where filling takes place with thermally insulating walls of cooled blast furnace slag. When full the bed may be covered with fluid blast furnace slag. The method includes magnetic dressing to remove free iron.
