Abstract

In preparing anionic perm-selective membranes for use in the electrodialytic purification of saline water, parchment paper is impregnated, at room temperature, with an aqueous solution of pH 2.5 to 10.0, containing one or more guanidinium salts and formaldehyde, and then dried and cured at a temperature of, at least, 110 DEG C. Suitable guanidinium salts are the nitrate and chloride, e.g. mixed with the carbonate. The solution may also contain melamine, or, alternatively, dicyanodiamide mixed, e.g. with furfurol or glyoxal. Ammonium carbonate, chloride or nitrate may be added to the solution. Alternatively, parchment paper may be impregnated with an aqueous solution containing dicyanodiamide, hexamethylene-tetramine, formaldehyde, hydrochloric acid and, if desired, urea. The unimpregnated parchment paper may be swelled by treating it with strong orthophosphoric acid and then leaching out the acid. Specifications 750,220, 750,238, [both in Group XXXVI], 813,606, [Group VIII], and 813,607, [Group XXXVI], are referred to.ALSO:Parchment paper is impregnated, at room temperature, with an aqueous solution of pH 2.5 to 10.0 containing one or more guanidinium salts and formaldehyde and is then dried and cured at a temperature of, at least, 110 DEG C. to form an anionic perm-selective membrane. Suitable guanidinium salts are the nitrate and chloride, e.g. mixed with the carbonate. The solution may also contain melamine or, alternatively, dicyanodiamide mixed, e.g. with furfurol or glyoxal. Ammonium carbonate, chloride or nitrate may be added to the solution. Alternatively, parchment paper may be impregnated with an aqueous solution containing dicyanodiamide, hexamethylene - tetramine, formaldehyde, hydrochloric acid and, if desired, urea. It is stated that the presence in the impregnating solution of a derivative of cyanamide not containing the guanidine structure, e.g. urea, introduces cross-linkages.
