Abstract

817,595. Knitting. SCOTT & WILLIAMS Inc. Oct. 21, 1955, No. 30179/55. Class 74 (2). A superposed cylinder machine has means for the production of pockets by two feed reciprocatory knitting with narrowing and widening, and means for shogging the sinker cams, for each reciprocation of the needle cylinders, against the direction of the reciprocation. Trapping between sinker hooks and bluff sinker ledges of the yarn extending between two needles being picked out of action by a pick 122 or 124 is thus avoided. The sleeve supporting the sinker cams 30, 32 is shogged between sinker cam positions X and Y corresponding to counter-clockwise and clockwise strokes respectively of the machine. The shogging to position X is produced by a cam carried on a gear bearing a crank-pin which oscillates the needle cylinders during reciprocatory knitting; and the return to position Y is produced by a spring. The shogging occurs as long butt sliders are passing the feed points, so that the cams are positioned by the time the short butt sliders are passing through their knitting waves. During round-and-round knitting, the sinker cams are held in position X, through suitable linkages, by a lever operating the clutch which controls the rotation of the fabric's take-up rollers and receiving cam. The latches of lower cylinder needles which take main yarn and pass down forward stitch cam 92, close beyond the trailing edge of a latch guard 156 and those of upper cylinder needles close when they reach an opening 152 in an upper latch guard 150. As lower cylinder sliders rise over cams 100, 102, towards the auxiliary feed, the latches of their needles open and are trapped behind a guard 158. The sliders are lowered somewhat by a cam 103 before passage down forward stitch cam 96 and the yarn is then above the ends of the needle latches, which cannot close without trapping it. The edge 163 of the guard 158 is closer to the needle cylinder than the edge 165 of a lower guard 164, and'the latches therefore pass smoothly behind the guard 164 which also holds open the latches of advanced upper cylinder needles. As the upper cylinder needles are retracted by the action of a cam 134 on their sliders, their latches, passing from behind guard 164, may go either behind or in front of guard 158; but the position of the yarn, trailing off a bevelled end 167 of the guard 164 ensures that it shall be caught by the latches of these needles as they close at a cut-out 162 in guard 158 or by reason of passing in front of that guard. During rotary knitting, auxiliary yarn B is drawn downwardly into position B1 by a spring-urged hook 172, so that the yarn approaches the needles from a level below that of the top edge 165 of the guard 164 and extends over its end 167. For reciprocatory knitting, the hook 172 is put out of action. During forward strikes, the auxiliary yarn is led at B2 from a corner 184<SP>1</SP> of a wire loop 184, to pass freely between guards 158, 164; but during the reverse strokes, it is led from a corner 184<SP>11</SP> of the loop along a higher path B3. The latches of picked and instep needles (in whichever cylinder) and of cleared heel needles, are guarded by the corresponding empty sliders. Prior to heel formation, all short butt needles are placed in the lower cylinder, cams 134 and 140 are withdrawn to leave in cleared positions the instep needles in the upper cylinder, and cams 116, 118 and moved to positions 116<SP>1</SP>, 118<SP>1</SP>, and raise the long-butt instep sliders in the lower cylinder to inactive level above the knitting cams. The sock is knitted entirely two-feed and has a rib top D and leg E, a plain part F, a plain sole J, plain courses at K, and plain loopers' waste courses at M. Fig. 12 shows a portion of the inside of a heel suture. Specification 411,300 is referred to.
