Abstract
817,405. Laminates and laminating. TWEEDIE, R. Jan. 3, 1958 [Oct. 29, 1956], No. 32807/56. Class 140. [Also in Group XV] A frame for a tennis or like racquet is constructed of alternate laminµ of wood and of a metal or alloy having a specific gravity of less than 8, the laminµ being bonded together with a thermosetting resin in such a manner that the metal laminµ are prestressed. As shown, the laminµ of wood 5 and metal 6 are bent round a former 10 by a metal band 11 that passes down between the wooden laminµ 5 and clamping bars 9. This band is anchored at the handle ends of clamping bars 9, and clamping action is provided by screwed blocks 12 moving together to pull band 11 tightly round laminµ 5 and former 10. Each lamina is first coated with a thermosetting resin adhesive and then assembled as shown, the metal laminµ being of a length to project as shown; the clamps are tightened and then loosened slightly. A low-voltage highamperage current is then passed through the metal laminµ until they attain a temperature sufficient to cure the adhesive. The clamps are then tightened and the contraction of the metal laminµ in returning to ambient temperature prestresses the frame.
