Abstract

817,289. Respiratory apparatus. BRITISH OXYGEN CO. Ltd. April 5, 1957 [April 17, 1956], No. 11703/56. Class 81 (2). [Also in Groups XIX and XXIX] A warning device for indicating fall in pressure in one of two or more gases used in respiratory apparatus comprises signalling means operated by the flow of a first gas and valve means responsive to a control pressure derived from the flow of a second gas, the valve means cutting off the flow of the first gas to prevent operation of the signalling means when the control pressure due to the second gas exceeds a predetermined value. The bellows 10, Fig. 1, is fixed to one end 12 of a housing 11 and is connected to a supply of oxygen through a tube 13. A rubber tube 18 is arranged in a second housing 17 so that it is at right angles to the axis of the bellows 10 and receives anaesthetic gas. If the pressure of oxygen in the bellows 10 exceeds a predetermined amount, the plunger 16 secured to the free end of the bellows 10 is moved towards an abutment 20 which projects into the second housing 17, and flattens the rubber tube 18, thus preventing anaesthetic gas reaching a whistle 19. If the control pressure in the bellows falls below a predetermined amount the bellows 10 contracts withdrawing the plunger 16 so that anaesthetic gas reaches the whistle 19 and an audible warning is given. In an alternative construction, the free end of the bellows 23, Fig. 3, connected with the oxygen supply carries, a plunger 28 which slides in a first bore 29 in a valve plate 30. Normally anaesthetic gas, connected with a second bore 31 in the valve plate 30 which intersects the first bore 29 at right angles, is prevented by the plunger 28 from flowing to a housing 36 containing a reed 34. If the control pressure in the bellows 23 falls below a predetermined amount a circumferential groove 38 in the plunger 28 registers with the second bore 31 in the valve plate to permit the flow of anaesthetic gas to the reed 34 to give an audible warning. The plunger 28 permanently engages spring contacts 45, 46 in an electric circuit which includes a lamp 57 and a battery 54. Where the control pressure in the bellows 23 exceeds a predetermined amount of insulating portion 40 of the plunger 28 connects the spring contacts so that the circuit is broken. If the control pressure in the bellows 23 falls so that the audible warning is given, a conducting portion 41 of the plunger 28 completes the electric circuit and the lamp 57 lights to give a visible warning.
