[Also in Groups XXXV and XXXVI] Multi-layer electric insulating materials, made by wrapping tapes &c. around mandrels or by the hand or mechanical wrapping of electric components and equipment, comprise absorbent sheet material such as paper, or fabrics woven from cotton, glass fibres, or nylon, impregnated with a permanently liquid dielectric and coated with a resin which cures without producing volatile components, viz. an epoxy or unsaturated polyester resin, the resin-being cured after wrapping, for example in the cold or by H.F. or other electric heating. Impregnants comprise transformer oil, or non-inflammable liquids such as chloro-diphenyls alone or mixed with trichlorobenzene or mineral oil, fluorocarbons, or a mixture of mineral oil with hexachlorobutadiene. A hardener may be included in the resin itself or, to prevent its premature hardening, may be wholly or partly included in the impregnant. The wrappings may include mica flakes. Instead of a separate coating the resin and impregnant may be applied together as an emulsion. Alternatively only the outer wrapping layers may be coated and the hardened shell so formed may include conducting material such as wire fabric, graphite or metal foil to form a condenser type bushing. To avoid occlusion of air the wrapping operation may take place during immersion in an insulating liquid, which may be the impregnant or some other liquid. For example the following immersion liquids and impregnants respectively may be used:- kerosene and transformer oil, chlorodiphenyl and mineral oil, dichloro-benzene and chlorodiphenyl. Coating may also be effected beneath the immersion liquid and the resin coating may thereafter be hardened, as by heating the liquid. Impregnation material may also be stored beneath the immersion liquid.
