Class 39(3) An electrode liquid heater comprises a glass container 1 provided with electrodes 19, 20, 21 mounted on a plug 18 sealed in a bottom opening 3 in the container by a rubber band 22. Two strips 17 of a lid 15 which is of plastic are hinged to a handle 10, a cam 31 operated by the strips being rotated on opening and closing the lid. A pair of contacts 30 is connected in each of the connections from plugs 28 to a switch 25, the cam 31 causing the contacts to close when the lid is closed and allowing them to separate when the lid is opened; the current supply is thus disconnected when liquid is being poured from the container or when access to the inside of the container is possible. The switch 25 enables the rate of heating to be controlled by connecting in circuit either electrodes 19 and 20, or 20 and 21, all the electrodes being shrouded by a cover 35 having openings 36 and formed of plastic. The lid is formed with an annular recess 32 which prevents a direct stream of liquid flowing from the container when the contacts 30 are not separated and the lid is ineffectively closed or only slightly open.
