Abstract

Synthetic resin or rubber is cross-linked and/or vulcanized by treatment with ionizing radiation such as accelerated electrons, neutrons, X-rays, or gamma-rays in the substantially complete absence of molecular oxygen, both in contact with the surface of the substance and within the substance itself. The treatment may be performed in a vacuum or in a nonoxidizing atmosphere, e.g. of nitrogen, a rare gas, or carbon dioxide, or air may be excluded from the material being treated by covering it with aluminium foil, a transparent cellulose film, or varnish. The treatment of polyethylene, polystyrene, a polyester, natural rubber, and a butadiene-styrene copolymer is referred to. Examples are described illustrating the high tensile strength of polyethylene samples treated with gamma rays in a vacuum and in a nitrogen atmosphere, and of other polyethylene samples treated with X-rays when covered with aluminium foil or a transparent cellulose film. Specification 665,263 is referred to.ALSO:Synthetic resin or rubber is cross-linked and/or vulcanized by treatment with ionizing radiation such as accelerated electrons, neutrons, X-rays, or gamma rays in the substantially complete absence of molecular oxygen, both in contact with the surface of the substance and within the substance itself.
