Abstract

1358209 Radiation cure of synthetic rubbers FIRESTONE TIRE & RUBBER CO 17 May 1972 [1 June 1971] 23059/72 Heading C3P Synthetic rubber compositions curable by high energy ionizing radiation at an average radiation dose (when the composition is in the pure state) of 0À5-7 megarads, comprise a least one diolefin polymer or copolymer having a weight average molecular weight of at least 50,000 and a molecular weight distribution (defined) or 1À01-30, the distribution of monomer units affecting the total cross-linking rate being such that when the value of the fraction G(cross-link)x i /G(cross-link) (defined) is greater than 1À5, from 50-100% of the monomer whose cross-linking rate contribution is represented by G(cross-link)x i is in molecules having a M.W. less than the weight average M.W. of the rubber; and when the said value is below 0À5, up to 50% of the said monomer is in molecular having a M.W. less than the weight average M.W. of the rubber. The compositions may be blended with conventional additives and cured at average radiation doses of up to 15 megarads, optionally with the aid of radiation promoters, e.g. p-dichlorobenzene, ethylene glycol dimercaptoacetate or a polyhydrosulphide. Suitable rubbers include polybutadiene, SBR and ethylene/propylene/ethylidene norbornene terpolymer.
