Abstract

816,758. Casting processes. FERRO ENGINEERING CO. March 15, 1957 [May 2, 1956], No. 8584/57. Class 83 (1). A cover for use on the exposed molten surface of a casting or ingot consists of a box 1 of heatdestructible material, e.g. cardboard, and containing a layer 3 of exothermic material, a non- collapsable partition plate 10, e.g. of steel, or ceramic, above the said exothermic material, and a layer 5 of heat-insulating material, e.g. asbestos, insulating grog, above said plate. In use the box 1 burns away, the exothermic material 3 rides the lowering level of the melt and the plate 10 supports the insulating layer to minimize heat losses through the open end of the hot tap 9.
