816,387. Abrasive blasting. GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION. Nov. 7,1957 [Nov. 7, 1956], No. 34702/57. Class 60. A portion of the insulation between the individual metal segments of a commutator for a dynamo-electric machine is removed by means of afluid-carried abrasive ; the operation is performed after the commutator has been machined to a predetermined outer diameter and finish. An armature assembly includes a commutator 34 and a core 36 on which wire coils are wound, the ends of the coils being secured to the segments 38 of the commutator which are insulated from one another by mica or other insulating material ; the assembly is placed on a loading platform 30 and its shaft 40 is ducked between rods 41, 42 movable by air or hydraulic cylinders 24, 26, which are then actuated to move the assembly to the operating position. In this position the wire windings of the core 36 are pressed against a grommit 50 of elastomeric material held in a drive device 51 rotated by a belt 54 from an electric motor. An abrasive slurry, comprising 40 per cent. aluminium oxide 200-400 mesh and 60 per cent. water is supplied through nozzle 48 and projected against the commutator by steam at 150 p.s.i. supplied through nozzle 44. After the operation has been completed, any grit remaining on the commutator is removed by steam or air delivered through nozzle 46. A hood 56 is provided. The nozzle may be oscillated.
