Abstract
1,084,479. Inductor machines. TRW Inc. Aug. 1, 1966, No. 34469/66. Heading H2A. A planar-air-gap type inductor motor or generator has a series of mutually interleaved stator and rotor discs 17, 16, each having alternate sectors of magnetic and non-magnetic materials to carry or block the axial flux generated by a coil 21 wound around the whole machine. The magnetic sectors may be of compressed powdered iron, wire bundles or shaped laminated material, and the non-magnetic sectors of aluminium or ceramic. The coil 21 is of strip. The machine is fed with current pulses, and depending on the phasing of these pulses with respect to the rotor position, the machine will generate or absorb electric power, i.e. it will act as a motor or generator. The current pulses may be generated by a mechanical switch or by electrical resonance induced by a separate inductance or another machine of the same sort displaced by 180 degrees. The machine may be embraced by concentric A.C. and D.C. coils. Where the machine operates on alternating field, this may be locally bucked by an A.C. coil wound round the rotor shaft. The machine may be arranged for polyphase operation by the use of pancake coils of sector-shape carried on the stator discs.
