Abstract
816,241. Draining pumps. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. July 8, 1957 [Aug. 31, 1956], No. 26666/56. Class 102(1). A pump is arranged so that at the end of operation the inlet and outlet valves may be opened in order to drain the liquid from the pump. A bellows 7 is attached at 8 to the bottom of chamber 2. The upper end of the bellows is sealed and a rigid rod 11, protruding from the top of the bellows, is fixed to the top of the bellows and to the lower end of a spring 12 which abuts a shoulder 13 of a cavity 9 in communication with the interior of the bellows. A guide 14 for the rod 11 in the chamber 2 is provided with apertures for the passage of liquid being pumped. The liquid being pumped passes through inlet 21, chamber 2 and inlet valve 3, through passages 15, 16, 17, 18, 19 and 20 to a chamber 4 containing a second bellows construction as described above, and then past outlet valve 5 to the outlet 6. At the end of pumping fluid pressure, preferably oil, is fed through passages 10 to the interior of the bellows which moves the rods 11 to open the inlet and outlet valves 3, 5 and the liquid drains from the pump under gravity. In the position shown the bellows are preferably in a compressed state and the expansion of the bellows to open the valves is such that they remain under compression. A jacket 25 is provided, within which a heating fluid may be circulated, to apply heat to the liquid, such as trinitrotoluene, being pumped.
