A tachograph carrying a record sheet on which the speed of the vehicle is recorded comprises a first driving means for rotating the record sheet at a slow rate during the normal operation of the vehicle, and a second fast-driving means that can, when desired, by manually brought into operation when the vehicle is accelerating or retarding so as to give a large time base to the record of the acceleration or retardation. A second marking means is adapted to indicate over what portions the time base has been increased. In Fig. 1 one end of a spiral spring 4 is coupled to a shaft 5 on which is freely mounted a disc 7 for supporting the record shaft, the speed of the shaft 5 being controlled by gear means 11 cooperating with a conventional clockwork escapement mechanism that is not illustrated. A spring-pressed ball 8, Fig. 2, interconnects the shaft 5 and the disc 7 so that when the shaft 5 turns in the direction a the disc 7 is forced to turn with it but if the disc 7 is rotated in the direction " a "by the second driving means at a speed greater than that of the shaft 5 then it is free to do so. The other end of the spiral spring 4 is coupled to its housing 3 which is rotatable about the shaft 5 to drive a chain of gear-wheels geared to the disc 7. This chain of gear-wheels is normally held against rotation by means such as a displaceable pin 27, Fig. 2, extending into a hole in one of the gear-wheels. Ratchet means are provided in this gear-chain to permit the disc 7 to be rotated by the shaft 5 even though the gear chain is locked by the pin 27. When the pin 27 is displaced this gear chain is driven by the spring 4, and controlled by an escapement mechanism 23-25, such that the disc 7 is rotated at a speed greater than that of the shaft 5. Figs. 4 and 5 show an arrangement in which when a brake pedal 40 is depressed to slow down a vehicle, a part 42 thereon automatically displaces the pin 27 to allow the speed of the record sheet to increase. At the same time electrical contacts 46, 47 are closed to cause a solenoidoperated marking means 51 to engage the record sheet and draw a line 58 to indicate over what portion of the record sheet the velocity line 59 is drawn to a different time base. In an alternative construction a fluid-pressure circuit responsive to the operation of a brake of the vehicle closes a switch to cause a second marking means to move from an idle position to a second position to indicate over what period the record sheet was rotated at the higher speed.
